Some Teams Simply Get No Respect
The Chicago White Sox are the defending World Series Champions. They’re one-half game ahead in the 2006 Wild Card race. But they seem like losers, to me. Last year, I marveled at their achievements, but this year they can’t get any respect, at least from yours, truly. Perhaps it’s the way the Tigers came back to win a recent game against the Yankees, with a three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs. Far from invincible, the Tigers are still able to maintain a respectable lead in the Central Division while the Sox are neck and neck with the Twins vying for the Wild Card slot. Maybe, my expectations were higher for the Sox than a Wild Card run. Last year, Ozzie Guillen seemed like an eccentric genius. This year, he’s been annoying me no end. Some of this is because of his runaway mouth, but he wasn’t altogether mute in 2005. Ken Williams, the General Manager was lauded last year for cobbling a team that pulsed with a single heartbeat all season long. He said he was committed to winning the championship again this year, but his trades, or lack of trades, tell a different story. Admittedly, picking up Jim Thome was a sharp move, but cutting Aaron Rowand to accomplish that move was not so smart, from a chemistry point of view. Granted, Rowand’s all out, crashing into walls and other players approach to the game, was risky, and it ended his season with the Phillies, prematurely, this year. Still, he was a sparkplug, a difference in the dugout and on the field who made a difference. I’ve already said, many times, that jettisoning Frank Thomas was inappropriate, and now we’re seeing it was costly, too. He’s producing for Oakland. Yes, the Sox might prevail in the Wild Card race and make it to the post-season. But can they beat a surging Detroit that has the killer combo of talent, leadership, and chemistry? I doubt it. Will they get past the Yanks or the Mets? I don’t think so. Each of those teams seems like a juggernaut, right now. The Sox look flat, and that makes me feel flat.
