Inside the Boxscores is a weekly feature from Matt Fargo that has been widely recognized as the best summation in college football. He takes an in-depth look at each game and pulls out the most pertinent information that will help you handicap games in the future. College football is filled with quirky plays, misleading scores and surprise endings. Fargo takes you inside the action.

Baylor 34 COLORADO 31

It took three overtimes to decide this contest as Baylor intercepted a Colorado pass to end the game. It was a tight game throughout as the Bears won the yardage battle by only 31 total yards and no team ever had a lead of more than seven points. Both teams had three turnovers but the Buffaloes miscues were more costly as the Bears scored 10 of their points off turnovers. Colorado had just 75 yards passing.

(2) FLORIDA 23 (14) L-S-U 10

LSU outgained Florida in this game 318-288 but the Tigers committed five turnovers that led to 16 Gators points. LSU scored a touchdown on its first possession but then turned the ball over on three of its next four drives. After a safety on the 2nd half kickoff, the Gators took the free kick which led to a touchdown to put the game away. Florida was hurt by 14 penalties for 102 yards.

KANSAS STATE 31 Oklahoma State 27

The Cowboys had a 10-point lead late in the fourth quarter but Kansas St. scored two touchdowns in under two minutes to pull out the comeback win. Oklahoma St. scored on its first four possessions of the second half and had a chance to pull off the victory but was intercepted on the final play of the game. The Wildcats scored two touchdowns on special teams, one on a blocked punt and one on a kickoff return.

(4) MICHIGAN 31 Michigan State 13

Michigan jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the third quarter and had a total yardage advantage of 296-106 at that point. The Spartans made the game more respectable with late production as they ended up getting outyarded by just 39 total yards. The Wolverines outgained Michigan St. on the ground 211-60 and the Spartans were hurt by 11 penalties. Michigan was just 3-10 on third down conversions.

IDAHO 28 New Mexico St 20

The Aggies fell behind 28-13 late in the second quarter and couldn’t recover. In the second half, New Mexico St. was inside the Idaho 33-yard line four times but came away with only one score. The Vandals also had numerous chances in the second half, getting inside the Aggies 32-yard line three times but threw an interception and missed two field goals. New Mexico St. rushed for only 31 yards on 17 carries (1.8 ypc).

COLORADO STATE 28 U-N-L-V 7

Colorado St. concluded the scoring by returning an interception 14 yards for a touchdown. The Rebels went just 2-17 on third and fourth down conversions.

EAST CAROLINA 31 Virginia 21

East Carolina outgained the Cavaliers 432-298 and won the time of possession battle by over 16 minutes. The score could have been worse as the Pirates missed two field goals and Virginia scored a garbage touchdown with just 18 seconds remaining. A blocked punt by Virginia set up its second touchdown to pull within 10 points but the Cavaliers were forced to punt on their next three possessions and couldn’t get closer.

South Carolina 24 KENTUCKY 17

Kentucky fell behind 17-0 and tried to stage a second half comeback but fell short. The Wildcats had only three first half possessions but took advantage in the second half as they entered Gamecocks territory on each of their final five possessions. Washington St 13 OREGON STATE 6

Oregon St. committed four costly turnovers but was still very much alive. The Beavers drove down to the Washington St. 23-yard line with less than two minutes remaining but a sack on fourth down killed the scoring chance. The Cougars won the yardage battle 355-287 but neither team was able to run the ball. Texas Tech rallied to pull within three points but Missouri scored the final two touchdowns to seal the win.

NORTH TEXAS 25 Florida International 22

It took seven overtimes as the Mean Green were able to finally put the game away on a field goal. Neither team got into the endzone in the extra sessions as there were five fields goals and eight field goal attempts that were missed. The redzone numbers were ugly as Florida International went 3-7 while North Texas was a little better at 4-7. The Golden Panthers kicked a field goal with two seconds left to tie the game at the end of regulation.

UL Lafayette 31 HOUSTON 28

Houston jumped ahead 21-0 and had a comfortable 15-point lead late in the third quarter before the Cajuns stormed back. UL-Lafayette drove 85 yards for the go ahead score with 1:02 remaining and the defense held the Cougars to a four and out to end the game. Quinn has the much better numbers lately but it shouldn't go unnoticed that the Irish haven't exactly faced "Murderers Row." Since Notre Dame was beaten badly by Michigan back on September 16 (47-21), ...

With Gooden and Kirilenko playing it should be a fairly low-scoring game with the Jazz winning a close one. Cavalie ...

NFC East - the Toughest Division in Football

Most of the divisions in the NFL this year seem fairly straight forward, at least at the top.
