Rocky Atkinson's Race Day (Atlanta 10-29-06)
The Chase for the Nextel Cup Championship has really tightened up since Martinsville this past week. Wow, the Top 8 drivers are within 99 points of the lead. The Nextel Cup boys move to Atlanta this weekend. The race takes place at 2:30 pm est this Sunday October 29th. 325 laps of non-stop action on the 1.54 mile oval track in Hampton, Georgia. Matt Kenseth is the leader in the Nextel Cup Point Standings and his 36 points ahead of his closest competitor Kevin Harvick. Many counted Jimmie Johnson out of the race for the Cup early on but he has made his way all the way back to 3rd only 41 points out of 1st. Sitting in 4th is Denny Hamlin, 47 points back and rounding out the Top 5 is Jeff Burton who is 48 points behind the leader. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is in 6th, 94 points back, Mark Martin in 7th, 96 points back and Kasey Kahne is in 8th, 99 points behind Matt Kenseth. Jeff Gordon sits in 9th place 141 points behind the leader and rounding out the Top 10 is Kyle Busch 171 points out of 1st. Let’s talk quickly about the pole position at Atlanta. This has been mastered by Ryan Newman over the years as he has won the pole 6 times in his 9 races here. Kasey Kahne broke up a huge streak Newman had going as he won the pole the last race here. Newman has a 1.8 average starting position. UNREAL!! We’re not going to say much more about this except you have to take Ryan Newman to win the pole. As far as the drivers we are looking to win this race. Our top driver is Kasey Kahne who has one win in Atlanta and four Top 5 and Top 10 finishes in his 5 races here. Kahne has an average finish of 9.8 in Atlanta. Kahne has been very tough this year and he should be at the front when the checkered flag waves. Coming in a close 2nd is Carl Edwards. Edwards has two wins in 4 races here along with three Top 5 and Top 10 finishes in those 4 races. He has an average finish in Atlanta of 11.2. He has won half the races he has raced in Atlanta and should be among the frontrunners once again. Rounding out our favorite Top 3 drivers to win is Bobby Labonte. Labonte has a whopping 6 victories in Atlanta in his career. Labonte knows how to get around this track. He has a decent average finish of 15.7 in his 27 race career here in Atlanta.
