LSU scored the game-winning touchdown with just nine seconds remaining. LSU outgained the Volunteers by 230 total yards but it had four turnovers that led to 17 points for Tennessee. The Ducks held Washington to 138 total yards and only 10 first downs yet the Huskies trailed by only three points midway through the third quarter. Oregon then scored the final 17 points to pull away. Both of Washington’s touchdowns came off interceptions as the Ducks had three turnovers along with a missed field goal. Oregon had 316 yards rushing on 54 carries (5.9 ypc) while the Huskies had 13 yards on 21 carries (0.6 ypc).

Purdue 17 MICHIGAN STATE 15

The Spartans couldn’t rally enough around head coach John L. Smith as Purdue kicked the game-winning field goal with 4:49 remaining. Michigan St. got the ball back one more time but was stopped on fourth down at its own 40-yard line. The winning field goal was set up by the Spartans lone interception of the day. Both teams finished 3-12 on third down conversions while Purdue was only 2-5 inside the redzone.

Kansas State 34 COLORADO 21

Kansas St. outgained the Buffaloes 439-370 and after jumping ahead 17-0, the Wildcats had to hold off a Colorado rally. The Buffaloes pulled to within six points early in the fourth quarter but the Wildcats cemented the win by scoring the next two touchdowns. Colorado turned the ball over on downs twice, once at the Wildcats one-yard line and also missed a field goal early in the game.

HOUSTON 27 Tulsa 10

Tulsa took a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter but the Cougars ran off the final 20 points to pull away. Houston outgained the Golden Hurricane 471-249 as it used a very balanced attack of 227 yards rushing and 244 yards passing. Tulsa was 1-3 inside the redzone although one of those missed opportunities occurred as time expired. The lone Tulsa touchdown was set up by a fumble that resulted in a nine-yard drive.

(1) Ohio State 17 ILLINOIS 10

Illinois gave the Buckeyes all they could handle as it won the yardage battle by nine yards, holding the Ohio St. offense to just 224 total yards. Ohio St. jumped ahead 17-0 but the Illini defense stiffened, forcing five punts and grabbing an interception in the final six possessions. Illinois didn’t cross midfield until early in the fourth quarter as it gained only 100 yards up to that point.

WESTERN MICH 27 Miami-Ohio 24

This game was close throughout and it culminated with a Western Michigan field goal with 1:16 remaining, following an 86-yard drive. Miami got the ball back one last time but was stopped on its own 44-yard line. The RedHawks had three turnovers including a fumble at the Broncos 13-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Missed opportunities hurt both sides but more so for the Golden Knights as they missed an early field goal and were stopped on fourth down at the East Carolina 17-yard line at the end of the 1st quarter. Central Florida also tossed two interceptions on its final two possessions, the first which was returned for a touchdown. The Golden Knights were held to just 58 yards rushing on 26 carries (2.2 ypc).

OREGON STATE 44 Arizona State 10

Oregon St. finished a perfect 7-7 inside the redzone.

Arizona 27 WASHINGTON ST 17

Washington St. fumbled at its own 28-yard line and turned it over on downs at its own 21-yard line but the Wildcats managed only two field goals from that. The Cougars also fumbled at the Wildcats three yard line on the opening possession of the second half. Two Arizona turnovers led to 10 Washington St. points.

Nevada 45 IDAHO 7

Nevada held the Vandals to 209 yards of offense and 11 first downs while also forcing four turnovers. Idaho gained only 31 total yards on its first seven possessions as the Wolf Pack built a 31-0 lead. Nevada won the TOP battle by close to 16 minutes.

(25) B-Y-U 24 COLORADO STATE 3

BYU outgained the Rams 402-151 and held Colorado St. to just seven first downs. The Rams got their only score on a field goal following a short punt that resulted in a short field. BYU finished 8-13 on third down conversions while the Rams went just 2-12 on their attempts.

(7) U-S-C 42 STANFORD 0

An angry Trojans team took their frustration out on an overmatched Stanford team despite gaining just 355 yards of offense. The defense held the Cardinal to 208 total yards and 12 first downs while forcing three turnovers. USC blocked a field goal for a touchdown and also stopped Stanford on fourth down at the 33-yard line to help preserve the shutout.

(18) WAKE FOREST 21 (22) Boston College 14

Wake Forest won for the third straight time by getting outgained, this time 430-280. The Deacons forced three turnovers, none of which were bigger than the interception in the end zone with less than a minute remaining. (19) Georgia Tech 31 NC STATE 23

Georgia Tech outgained the Wolfpack 409-328 but needed to rally in the fourth quarter and put the game away with a touchdown with 2:24 remaining. NC State had one last chance but turned it over on downs at the Georgia Tech 30-yard line. The Wolfpack had touchdowns on an interception return and a kickoff return, both of which cut the Yellow Jackets lead to one-point.

Louisiana Tech 34 NORTH TEXAS 31

This was arguably the craziest game of the day as Louisiana Tech built a 21-0 lead before the Mean Green ran off 31 straight points to take a 10-point lead midway though the third quarter. The Bulldogs responded by scoring the final 13 points to pull out the win. North Texas finished with five turnovers including interceptions on three of its final four possessions. The Bulldogs scored 24 points off those turnovers.

(4) TEXAS 36 Oklahoma State 10

Oklahoma St. did not score an offensive touchdown as the only trip to the endzone came on an 89-yard kickoff return. Texas scored 17 points off Cowboys turnovers and Oklahoma St. didn’t help matters by committing 10 penalties, four of which led to Texas first downs.

MARSHALL 42 Tulane 21

Marshall went ahead 21-0 but Tulane roared back to tie the game before the Herd scored the final 21 points to pull away. Marshall scored its second touchdown on an interception return and two of its final three touchdowns came on drives of 24 and 26 yards. Tulane finished 10-18 on third down conversions but was stopped on fourth down twice in the fourth quarter. Marshall was only 4-7 inside the redzone.

(11) Arkansas 26 SOUTH CAROLINA 20

Arkansas built a 26-6 lead but had to hold off a big Gamecocks rally to pull out the win. South Carolina drove 92 and 99 yards on consecutive possessions to pull within six points but was stopped by an interception at the Razorbacks 41-yard line with five minutes left. Arkansas was able to run the clock out on 11 plays to end the game. The Razorbacks had 495 yards of offense but went 2-4 inside the redzone.

(20) Virginia Tech 17 MIAMI-FLORIDA 10

Miami held the Hokies to just 109 total yards but two interceptions by the Hurricanes offense were the difference. Virginia Tech scored both touchdowns off those picks on drives of 36 and 26 yards, including the game winner with 1:39 remaining. Miami threw another interception on the very next play to seal the game. The Hurricanes lone touchdown came on a 50-yard run as they didn’t reach the redzone the entire game.

San Jose St 31 NEW MEXICO ST 21

San Jose St. is bowl eligible and that is not a misprint. The Spartans rallied from a 21-8 deficit by scoring the final 23 points of the game. San Jose St. got the lead back thanks to a two-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The Aggies actually won the yardage battle 429-361 and scored touchdowns on their first three possessions but they turned it over on downs four times.

(8) CALIFORNIA 38 U-C-L-A 24

California racked up 516 yards of offense and built a 35-10 lead to pull away. The Bruins put up 433 yards of offense but missed two field goals and threw two interceptions inside the Bears 30-yard line. UCLA ran 16 less plays from scrimmage and actually outgained the Bears 7.5 ypp to 7.0 ypp. California was 10-17 on third down conversions while UCLA was 6-9 and punted only once.

(17) Oklahoma 17 (24) TEXAS A&M 16

Oklahoma scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, both being 80-yard drives and despite gaining just 103 yards the rest of the way, the Sooners never lost the lead. Texas A&M was forced to kick two field goals on it’s last two possessions including one from the Sooners two-yard line. The Aggies recovered two fumbles in Oklahoma territory but the ensuing possessions both resulted in negative yardage.

Rice 37 TEXAS-EL PASO 31

Rice jumped out to a 30-10 lead but had to hold off a late Miners rally to win its third straight game. The Owls stopped UTEP on fourth down at the three-yard line early in the fourth quarter and later missed a short field goal that would have sealed the win. After UTEP pulled to within six points, the Owls killed the final 7:30 of the game and never gave the ball back. Rice controlled the TOP by close to 14 more minutes.

Southern Miss 42 MEMPHIS 21

Southern Mississippi jumped ahead 28-0 and never looked back as it had a 229-42 yardage advantage midway through the second quarter.
