Achieving Inner Harmony

In the ever changing and often turbulent days of the 21st Century, we are so busy trying to get ahead that we frequently forget to take care of our personal needs. However, it’s impossible to get ahead today if we ignore them.

In these stressful days, successful people know that the key to staying on top of their careers is being in touch with their physical and emotional needs. After all, if you can’t stay on top of your personal life, how can you stay on top of your professional one?

One of the most important yet overlooked ways to get in touch with your physical and emotional self is to get a good night’s sleep. People today often feel as if they have too much work to do and therefore don’t have enough time to get eight hours of sleep. Clinical studies on sleep have also shown that dreaming helps you to unlock your inner feelings and helps to keep you in touch with your subconscious mind.

While we’re on the subject of staying physically healthy, we must, of course, address the importance of eating right. Diets with too much fat and/or sugar can keep you on edge, in addition to adding a few pounds. Consume alcohol and caffeine moderately; they can interfere with your sleep patterns and upset your mental health.

Exercising is one of the most powerful means you have of achieving mind-body harmony. Exercise promotes not only physical health but mental health as well. It helps to reduce tension and makes us more aware of our bodies. Experts agree that exercising three times a week is ideal. I’m not suggesting that you train to become a marathon runner, but participate in activities that both provide a workout and allow you to enjoy the outdoors.

For example try to do things such as biking, walking, and swimming. These are all great exercises especially if you do them with a friend. When you exercise it’s important that you try to free you mind form all thoughts other than the exercise. You want to feel your muscles tensing and flexing when you exercise.

Meditation can be a great way to get in touch with your feelings. At least once a day take fifteen to thirty minutes and go to a quiet place to relax. Make sure there are no distractions, such as people coming in or the phone ringing. Many people find it helpful to listen to calming music or sounds of nature such as, the sound of ocean waves.

One of my clients has a very long commute to work every day and fighting the traffic every morning would put him in stressful frame of mind that would often affect his work negatively all morning. I got him to try meditating before he went to work and after a doing this for a while he told that it put him in a much better frame of mind to battle the daily stress of rush-hour traffic and thus he is much more positive when he gets to the office.

One of the worst poisons is negative emotion, such as anger. Many of us hold back and internalize our anger. The result can be that we develop a general hostility. For many of us, that translates into headaches, stomachaches, and depression. By meditating, we can relieve some of this anger. However, sometimes meditating isn’t enough. When you feel anger building, take a few deep breaths and try to understand the true reason for your emotion and then talk to someone about it. By freeing yourself of your emotional baggage, you can better tackle your daily problems.

Visualization is another powerful tool in making the mind-body connection. It is an advanced form of meditation. Begin by relaxing in a calm atmosphere. Visualize a beach or a pond or someplace where you feel at peace with yourself. Once you do that, try to visualize some aspect of your life that you wish to change, and visualize a successful outcome.

The key to successful visualization is to make what you visualize as real as you can. Involve all of your senses. If you’re visualizing that you’re at the beach, feel the sand between your toes, hear the waves crashing against the beach, and smell the salty air.

Laughing is wonderful for your body. It’s one of the best ways to relieve stress. Humor is also a great way to manage conflict. Few techniques defuse a potentially explosive situation than a good joke. For example, try putting a humorous cartoon on your desk. It will help you get through those nerve-racking days.

Doing something you enjoy is great way to relax and achieve inner harmony. Go for a long walk, play golf, or spend time with your family. Whatever you do, make sure you do it because it makes you feel good. For some of us, that may mean eating a chocolate sundae. As long as you don’t’ do it too often, that’s OK too.

Spirituality is perhaps the best way to way to achieve inner calmness. For many people going to church every week gives their life a higher purpose and greater meaning, but organized religion is not is not for everybody. Spirituality can also be achieved through other means, such as giving to others.

For example, I have a client who tells me that she gains the most satisfaction by volunteering to help others. She says that it gives her a feeling of inner peace that she can’t get from exercise or meditation. Helping others makes her feel whole. By helping others, we can also better appreciate our own lives.

However you achieve it physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being is one the greatest gifts you can give yourself. When you are able to experience that sense of harmony, every aspect of your life will benefit.
