WGC--Bridgestone Invitational

Two golfers tee off together on Sunday at the PGA Championship, the season’s last major. Identical scores. Same colored shirts: red. One leaves the first green with a par and finishes 2-over for the day, the other leaves the first green with a birdie and goes on to post a 4-under for the day. One is named Luke Donald. One is named Tiger Woods. Guess who shoots 4-under?

Donald wasn’t going to beat Tiger in essentially a match play round at a major (nobody else made a serious move under them) anyway, but you have to question the wardrobe selection. As if Tiger needs more incentive to win. Give him his red and pray for rain.

Was it motivation? Was it: I belong, too? I can see Donald looking at a closet full of shirts, a 20-foot-long color spectrum, and saying to himself: What, Tiger is the only guy out here who can wear red on Sunday?? Well, yeah. He’s pretty much got the market on the Sunday red motif.

Sergio Garcia’s shirt was a darker shade of red, maroon really, with yellowish pants---he looked like he got run over by the Washington Redskins fan store---but it was the same idea.

A trifling interpretation of the psychology at play? Maybe. But Phil Mickelson, who’s been on some Sunday leader boards with Tiger and was outplayed by the latter in the second of their two days paired together before the weekend, was wearing all black on Sunday.

Last week: With 1/6 unit on Tiger to win, 15-8 odds, I netted a whopping $89 in the outright. I won the head-to-head, too, with David Toms, T16, finishing ahead of Kenny Perry, T49. That netted $1,000 (it’s worth keeping an eye on Toms for the upcoming end-of-year tournaments.) So, a unit and change for the week, which brings my season total to minus 23 units.

This week’s World Golf Championships event is called the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. It used to be called the WGC-NEC Invitational. Under that name, the tournament was won four times by Tiger---three in a row from its inception in 1999, and last year. His odds are 5-4 to win this week. I was taking Tiger in every tournament at the start of the year, figuring if he had a 2000 kind of year, he’d win close to 50% of the time (in 2000, he won nine times in 21 official tournaments). He waited until the dog days of 2006 to revisit 2000. Take Tiger Woods (5-4), 1/6 unit.

I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for anyone else in this tournament. Maybe a post-major let down or general fatigue will open the door for someone. Could be Jim Furyk. Take Furyk (16-1), 1/6 unit. I hate picking the gentleman from Pennsylvania because he’s so plodding on the course, but he’s always a good pick. He’s got a win this year and eight more top-10s, four of them coming since mid June. Furyk doesn’t take a hole off, much less a tournament. He’ll be grinding to the end.

Take Stuart Appleby (66-1), 1/6 unit: Appleby deserves more respect than these odds indicate. Also a grinder, also a fine year. A win this week would give him three in 2006. Watching him contend all year, he’s played like he doesn’t want to wait for Kapalua.

In the head-to-head, take Furyk to finish higher than Mickelson (10-11), 1 unit: Lefty has 29 Tour wins; only three of them have come after the PGA Championship on the calendar. He’s not exactly known as a strong finisher. Perhaps the only reason to watch the Ryder Cup is to see how he does. A strong showing, like a winning 15-footer, would go some way to salve the U.S. Open wound.

The Ryder Cup

I don’t doubt that the American players in this week’s Ryder Cup care about the biennial tournament and really want to win. The suggestion that they don’t want it largely stems from the fact that they’ve won only three of the last ten, dating to 1985. That and the uniforms. The last time they won it, in 1999, the shirt portion of their uniforms ...
