Did you know that Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo is a golfer? He tried to qualify for the U.S. Open last year. You would have heard about it if he made it. None of the other former professional athletes, like Ivan Lendl, Mark McGwire or Brett Hull made it either. I bring it up as a pathetic segue to the Monday Night Football tilt. I have nothing to say about Kornheiser this week because I was mostly engaged in a losing discussion about soccer with two friends who were only watching the football game at my place because they bet on it and because they don’t have cable. A losing discussion because I couldn’t get through to them that I have no problem with soccer, it just doesn’t interest me the way other sports do. I missed big chunks of the game. And I had to explain football things to them, like “alligator arms” and this-is-why-that-was-a-terrible-pass. They’re not invited over next week. We have one more tournament before Tiger returns for the season-ender. I care about who’s on one of the numbered bubbles this week---30 (invitation to East Lake), 40 (invitation to Augusta), 125 (retain card for 2007)---only inasmuch as it might help with picks on the motivation front. Joe Durant won last week, going from 66 on the money list to 29. So that was a big jump, getting him into Augusta and a near lock for the Tour Championship. But at this point in the season I would caution against picking someone fighting for his job and financial security because he needs a strong showing at this week’s Chrysler Championship to crack the top 125. I often talk about how difficult it is to pick a winner in golf due to the number of entrants each week and the fact that a low-ranked guy can get hot for four days and beat top players. For the most part, though, they’re in the 130s and higher because they’re not that good. At least not this season. Maybe they were once good and maybe they promise to be, but at this point in the season, picking someone like Omar Uresti (132) because he’s got more at stake personally than Daniel Chopra (53) strikes me as bad business. You can carry this motivation theory to any relativist end that will justify a pick---Uresti is fighting for the chance to keep golfing for a living, while Chopra is fighting for a shot at Augusta, which he has not yet had in his young career---but relativism is in the province of convenience and rarely achieves anything. I’ve let it influence me in the past, and just a few weeks ago casually mentioned that going into the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, Davis Love III was ranked 39 on the money list. He won and assured himself a spot at East Lake, but was that really the motivating factor? Or was it that he was playing in his home state? Or was it that he hadn’t won since 2003? Last week: It doesn’t do me or you any good to note that I was this close to picking Durant to win the Funai Classic. It might mean I’m close, or it might mean I’m as far as I’ve been from making that kind of long shot prediction. As it turned out, my outright picks finished T5, T21 and T43---Vijay Singh, Greg Owen, and Robert Allenby, respectively. I had Owen in the head-to-head over Justin Rose, who finished fourth. So, I had my first losing week since the Ryder Cup and only my second in the last ten tournaments. The unit and a half lost brings the total to -13.5 units. At this week’s Chrysler Championship, take Daniel Chopra (66-1), 1/6 unit: I don’t like to go to the well too many times unless that well is Tiger, especially when the well doesn’t yield, but Chopra’s on a hot streak and, more importantly, looks like he means it. He played big down the stretch at the Frys.com two weeks ago in Vegas and nearly pulled out a win. He missed the cut last week. I look at it as two more days to prepare. He’s the best putter on Tour, and last year he finished T10 in this tournament. Take Zach Johnson (80-1), 1/6 unit: In a relatively weak field, it’s a little surprising that this Ryder Cupper comes in at these odds. He hasn’t won this year but seems a lock for the top 30. In one tournament since the Ryder Cup, he finished T45. Take Greg Owen (66-1), 1/6 unit: Going to the well again with this pick. You have to like the way Owen’s playing, even if he hasn’t been able to put together a win. In his last four tournaments he’s finished T9, T12, T16 and the T21 last week in Disney. Over those 16 rounds he’s shot in the 70s just three times. In the head-to-head, take Owen to finish higher than Chad Campbell (11-10), 1 unit: Using similar playing-well-lately logic for the Owen pick, I considered taking Justin Rose in the head-to-head this week, but I don’t like Rose and Singh head-to-head, especially since Vijay finished T5 last week. Vijay’s still sorting things out---he had four bogeys in the third round---but he’s still Vijay and a Rose is still a Rose.
