Breaking Bad Habits
We all have habits or routines that are part of who we are and what we do each day - but there may be times when we need to admit that some of those habits are not good for us. The bad habits that you would like to change may be annoying little quirks - or they may be issues that are holding you back from being the best that you can be. What habit do you want to break? • Procrastinating
• Being late all the time
• Biting your nails
• Being sloppy or disorganized
• Losing your temper
• Swearing Habits such as smoking, drinking, using drugs, gambling or overeating may become addictions. Seek professional help before these more serious habits threaten your health and well-being. Getting Started Breaking a bad habit may be challenging. But, you can do it if you really want to. The first step is to be honest with yourself. Commit to making the necessary changes. As you think of the habit you want to change, use these tips: • Make a list of the pros and cons of your habit.
• Make a list of all the benefits of getting rid of your habit.
• Ask yourself why you’are still engaging in your habit when it is destructive or problematic for you, and possibly your loved ones.
• Let those around you know that you’ll need their support. Enlist their help in keeping you honest in your efforts. Making Changes Once you start, do everything you can to help yourself succeed: • Break your goal into several manageable steps. Then, you can enjoy small victories along the way.
• Develop new routines and activities to avoid falling into old traps.
• Keep track of your progress. Create a chart or journal.
• Seek professional help and support groups if you feel the need.
• Reward yourself for your hard work. It took time to develop your habit, and it will take time to stop it. If you look for overnight success, you may get discouraged. Some days will be easier than others. If you slip up, do not let that keep you from trying again.
