There is a professional League rugby in the north, but mainly rugby is played by amateurs. Tennis is a very popular game. The great event of the tennis year is the Wimbledon Tournament (Wimbledon is a suburb south of London) in which champions compete from all over the world. Horse racing is another spectator sport. The general public likes races of horses and dogs because they provide suitable pretexts for betting. Contests between human beings, in running or jumping or throwing javelins or heavy weights, are less popular. Only few people are interested in bicycle racing. On the other hand, rowing in fours (the team of four) or eights (the team of eight) occupies a leading place in the sporting life of schools and universities. When English people use the word “hunting” they usually mean fox-hunting, a sort which is popular among a small but important minority: hunting is the sport for the rich. Fishing is the most popular sport of all, either simply and cheaply in nearby water or expensively in one of the Scottish rivers which are filled with trout or salmon. The English cannot claim that they have surpassing skills in any form of sport when they take part in international competition.
