Bingo - 11 Ways To Improve Your Experience
More and more people are spending longer and longer on the internet. More than ever, sites are coming up with methods of providing greater interaction, greater online experiences, and greater entertainment all round. However, the push to get us to spend more time online, leaves us open to the rigours that come with spending so much time at a computer, in one position and in front of a glaring, radiation emitting screen. Nielsen Netratings software show that on average we are spending 29 hours per week at our computer. These are session times for non-work related computer use. That’s roughly 4 hours of computer use, or potentially, 14 hours per day for those of us who work with a computer all day and then use one at home each night. Some of us have been to occupational health related workshops, and have been given advice on manual handling or how to sit properly on our chairs at work. But how many of us have been given advice on lengthy computer use, and how may of us take this advice home with them when setting themselves up for a night of online entertainment. Playing bingo online, while fun to play, can be addictive. Also, when played for long periods, can lead to physical problems which we may or may not notice right away. However, by just following a few of them, you can be assured that your online bingo experience will be improved and you never know, maybe your luck will too….. 1. Purchase a decent quality chair. Sitting for hours on end on a cheap flimsy office chair can do more damage than you think. By sitting in a more comfortable quality chair you are more likely to remain in a comfortable and less stressful position. There is nothing worse than trying to adjust your body to avoid an uncomfortable position. This can put strain on muscles and nerves in your body that you may feel later on, but do not realise are related to sitting in a poor position. A comfortable chair can help avoid this. 2. Do not sit in a directly upright position of 90 degrees. Contrary to belief the angle of your chair should be around 110-120 degrees so that your chair starts to work for your body. Sitting in an upright 90 degree position is a strain on your muscles. If your neck starts to ache, get up and walk around for 5 minutes. Make sure the computer keyboard is at a length which allows your elbow angle to be more than 90 degrees. Your arms should never be too bent at the elbow when typing or using a mouse. The screen should also be a minimum arms length away from your eyes, and the top of the screen should be at the same level as the top of your head. 3. Avoid using a glare guard. Common advice is to use a glare guard but really these can lead to more strain on your eyes as you try to focus on a computer screen through another screen. They also reduced clarity. The best advice is to position your computer away from the glare of lights or the sun. Also avoid the lights being directly in front of you in your line of site. A softly lit room is better than a glaring room, but no light at all is also bad. 4. Purchase a decent high resolution monitor and graphics card for your PC. The latest LCD monitors are best for resolution but some of the cheaper screens will do just fine. An old box style monitor should be discarded. 5. Blink more often. Most of us forget to blink while staring at a computer screen and this deprives the eyes of well needed moisture. 6. Increase the refresh rate on your computer. Have you ever watched the news and seen screens flickering behind the presenter. Well that is because your computer screens are constantly refreshing, measured at a rate per second of how many times your computer screen is re-drawn. Increasing this rate can help ease the strain on your eyes. Windows will default your settings to 60Hz per second if it cannot recognise the monitor and most people do not change this. If your monitor driver is installed correctly your setting should be okay, but you should always check. It should also be set higher the bigger your screen and resolution is. The minimum refresh rate provided by EU standards is 72Hz. For most PCs, change the monitor settings by right clicking on the desktop and choosing, properties, settings, advanced settings. 7. We have all heard that you should never spend too long sitting down without breaks. Getting up and walking around the room is a good idea that we do not always adhere to. Even wiggling your feet around and stretching your legs under the table will help. Of course make sure you have enough leg room under the table and all obstacles should be removed. 8. Make sure your computer is not too noisy. You can buy reduced noise fans for a low price. You will be amazed at the difference after changing them. Going to bed with the PC still ringing in your ears is caused by noisy fans on your PC. 9. Buy a Peace Lilly and grow it near your PC monitor. It is known that they absorb the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a computer screen. Keep these well watered as they can easily dry up when positioned close to a computer. 10. Keep a bowl of water in your room. If you have a warm environment, exacerbated by a PC (which can get very hot if used for long periods) can often dry the air. A bowl of water nearby (but not too close to the pc) should help keep the air moist enough to prevent your eyes from watering. If your eyes start watering, stop using the PC for now. 11. Relax. Losing money online can be stressful. Remember bingo is only a game and should be enjoyed as a game. Use it as a chance to meet friends and enjoy light entertainment.
