A Klaas Act - The New Dutch van Nistlerooy

The Dutch have a new star in their ranks and he is a true talent. He is called Klaas Jan Huntelaar and he plays for Ajax.

Huntelaar seems to have the world at his feet after he finished the 2005/06 on a high, helping Ajax qualify for next seasons Champions League and winning the Dutch Cup. A lot is expected of the 22-year-old this season.

So who is this player which the Dutch rate so highly?

Klaas Jan Huntelaar was born on 12th August, 1983, in Dremprt, Netherlands. He is regarded by many pundits as the rising star in Dutch football, having just scored 33 goals in the Eredivisie.

The young marksman started his career at PSV in 2001 and he failed to break into the first team, making only one single appearance. PSV loaned him out to De Graafschap in 2002/03 to gain experience. Huntelaar only made 9 appearances (mostly as a substitute) and failed to find the net.

PSV then recalled him at the end of the season and arranged a year long loan (for the 2003/04) with second division side AGOVV. Huntelaar finally found his feet in Apeldooran and he made his mark in the Eerste Divisie scoring 26 goals in 35 league games.

This form alerted several Eredivisie clubs but few were willing to take the gamble on a player who was unproven in the top flight. SC Heerenveen were willing to take a gamble on the 20-year old and they bought him for a nominal fee.

There were question marks hanging over Hunterlaar at the start of the 2004/05 season. Was he good enough to make the step up to the Eredivisie? After all he had only made one appearance for PSV and nine substitue appearances for De Graafschap and failed to score in those appearances.

Huntelaar proved the doubters wrong as he went on to score 17 goals in 31 appearances for SC Heerenveen helping them qualify for the UEFA Cup. The 2004/05 season was a success for the young marksman and his performances made many people sit up and take notice.

Even though Huntelaar proved that he could make it in the Eredivisie there were still people that doubted his talent. Were his 17 goals for Herenveen a one off? Did he take many defenders by surprise due to being an unknown?

The 2005/06 season was to be a make or break season for Huntelaar. Was his last season a one off or could he take his form into the new season?

Huntelaar started the season well scoring in SC Heerenveen ’s opening fitxtures (scoring six goals in seven games). His early form attracted interest from German outfit Hamburger SV and Dutch gianst Ajax and Feyenoord.

By the end of December the chase hotted up for the young striker. Huntelaar was in prolific form as he netted 17 goals in 15 games. Despite interest from Seville, Fiorentina and Hamburger SV, Hunterlaar decided to remain in the Eredivisie to continue his development and signed for Ajax for Dutch record 9 million Euros.

It did not go according to plan at first in Amsterdam as Danny Blind’s side struggled to get results. Huntelaar was also firing blanks and there were some critics that were still doubting Huntelaar’s talent.

In February Huntelaar found the net again and his form coincided with Ajax’s change in fortune. Ajax slowly climbed the table into a Champions League place and Huntelaar continued to impress with his performances. Huntelaar also proved he could score on the big stage when he scored in Ajax’s 2-2 draw with Inter Milan in the Champions League, this only enhanced his ever growing reputation.

Huntelaar was key to Ajax’s dramatic finish to the season. He scored twice in their 2-1 win over rivals PSV in the Dutch Cup final and also scored in their play-off for a Champions League place.

The 22-year-old scored 16 goals in 15 appearances for Ajax taking his total goals for the season to 33 (in 30 games).

Huntelaar’s form nearly earned him a place in the Dutch World Cup squad as he was named in their provisional squad. He missed out though as he was dropped from the final 23-man squad.

Huntelaar did star for his country though this summer as he represented the Dutch U21 team in the UEFA U-21 Championship in Portugal. His goal scoring exploits continued as he hit 4 goals in 5 games as the Dutch went on to beat the Ukraine in the final. His performances won him a place in the UEFA team of the tournament.

It is only a matter of time before Huntelaar is a a regular for for the Netherlands. Van Basten will be hoping he can take his club and U21 form on to the international stage.

Huntelaar proved the critics wrong again on his senior international debut for the Dutch. The prolific marksman netted two goals and created two assists as the Dutch beat Ireland 4-0 in Dublin.

Record to date:

* Netherlands 2 goals 1 game

* U21 14 goals 17 games

* 2002/03 PSV 0 goals 1 game

* 2002/03 De Graafschap 0 goals 9 games

* 2003/04 AGOVV 26 goals 35 games

* 2004/05 SC Heerenveen 17 goals 31 games

* 2005/06 SC Heerenveen 15 goals 17 games

* 2005/06 Ajax 16 goals 15 games
