Three Tips for Panic Attacks
Nothing can be as terrifying as a panic attack. I've had them on airplanes shortly after takeoff, and embarrasingly had to call a flight attendant over to help comfort me. Over the years I've brought my attacks to a more manageable level with three easy techniques. But don't take my word for it. Try them out for yourself: - Don't fight it. In fact, FORCE yourself to feel it. Say to yourself, "I'm feeling panic right now, but I sure wish I could feel even MORE nervous." It seems counter-intuitive, but it has the strange effect of almost confusing your brain: "Hey, wait a minute, you're supposed to be nervous right now! Why do you want me to feel even MORE nervous?!" - I'm sure you've heard this before, but concentrating on breathing after you've mastered the ability of feeling even more nervous can be quite calming. The proper way to breathe is to put your hand on your stomach and feel it rise and lower as your breathe. This pulls oxygen deeper into your lungs. - There is some evidence that magnesium depletion may increase sensitivity to anxiety and nervousness. Taking a magnesium supplement may help to lower frequency and severity of attacks. All three of these tips taken together may or may not help you. For me, it helped decrease the severity but not completely cure my attacks. For that I turned to other sources. Some, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, have not been as effective as advertised. Medications have only helped to a degree. But I have discovered a few therapies that have worked almost perfectly.
