Character?
The Minnesota Vikings traded Randy Moss because they wanted character individuals on their team. Well that's what they lead us to believe. Did they really trade Moss for that reason or did they want to dump his salary? We believe there were other reasons for trading Moss. So has trading Moss led to more character on the Vikings? Lets take a look at some facts: Mike Tice - Tice was fined for violating team rules when he scalped Super Bowl tickets. How does this show character? How is this being a good role model for his team? Why would his players follow the rules if their coach doesn't? Obviously this type of behavior doesn't exhibit character and isn't good for his team. This type of behavior is terrible. Onterio Smith - Smith was suspended for the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse program. Wow, what a character individual to have on your team. Smith was caught in an airport with a contraption called a Whizzenator. Cruise Ship incident - Some Vikings players are being investigated by the Hennepin County Sheriff's office for allegedly taking part in sexual misconduct, prostitution and drugs (startribune.com). The Vikings are really showing themselves to be character individuals. the Vikings are 1-3 and are playing terribly. So how do they try to rectify the situation? Instead of dealing with their terrible play, they decide to go on a cruise. It's amazing that the Vikings can't tackle the broad side of a barn but they allegedly know how to get hot and heavy with some strippers . Maybe they should spend more time on the practice field and less time getting in trouble. So this is the type of character that Mike Tice is after? I think these incidents make Randy Moss look like a Saint. So why did the Vikings trade Moss? I think there are a few reasons: 1) His Salary - The Vikings wanted to dump Moss's salary even though his contract was relatively recent. When the Vikings signed Moss they actually believed they could win a Super Bowl. When they failed to win the big game, I think the Vikings felt it was necessary to trade him. 2) Some Vikings players were jealous that Moss was receiving all the press. I think they were jealous of his superstar status and didn't want him to receive all the publicity. I think they hid behind the character excuse so he would be traded. 3) Too much negative publicity - I do think the negative publicity did play a role in Moss being traded. They probably thought they could deflect this negative publicity by trading Moss. Randy Moss isn't with the Vikings and the negative publicity continues. The Vikings need a character re-adjustment and they need to hire a head coach who can lead by example and instill it in his players.
